When a Used Engine Is the Honest Answer

Here is how we would weigh it up. If the motor is burning oil and down on compression but the rest of the car is sound — straight body, gearbox still shifting properly — a used engine is usually the sensible spend. If two or three other big items are just as tired, we will say so rather than take the order. When we do sell you a motor, we tell you what we know about the donor car: the model and year it came out of, the reading on the cluster where it is still legible, and the compression figures we take across all four cylinders before it leaves the yard. We look at the engine mounts at the same time, because a motor that has been rocking on perished mounts rarely comes on its own.
